2020 Volleyball Season Preview

The 2019 Trinity Christian Academy Conquerors varsity volleyball team returned to play as members of Florida’s Class 3A, District 2. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, Trinity finished with an overall record of 16-10, including a tremendous 3-2 win over district rival Providence. The Conquerors were the district runners-up. Head coach Crystal Dow called the season a success as her young Conquerors matured very quickly in a highly-competitive district. “They laid a great foundation with a young team, and we are looking forward to building on that this year,” said Coach Dow.

This year’s Conquerors have more experience and return most of the roster from 2019. Anna Grace Combs and Kayla Milligan have graduated, but this year’s roster is still loaded with talent. Senior Amaya Ross, junior Ally Carter, and eighth-grader Amaria King will help lead the team to a potential district title. The Conquerors, though, will face terrific district competition in Episcopal and University Christian. The remaining returning players have winning experience, and they can use that experience and leadership to help guide this team to success.

Freshman Ariel Ross moves up from the JV roster, and Alasia McGruder joins her. Coach Dow sees talent and further potential from these two young ladies that will serve TCA Volleyball for the next four years.

Coach Dow likes to tackle challenges without hesitation. With this shortened season, there is no time to waste in preparing for the postseason. This team knows each other well, which will prove vital even before the games begin.

The Conquerors will again play a rigorous schedule. “The whole season will be a tough schedule,” said Coach Dow, “because that’s the best way to prepare for the playoffs. Additionally, we will be cramming eight weeks of regular-season matches into a shortened regular season of only five weeks before the district playoffs begin.”

Coach Dow said the players like the tough the schedule because it will keep them more focused on winning, improving, and preparing for more. “They are excited,” she said. “This is a competitive group, and they don’t want to be bothered with easy wins.“

With the shortened season and the tough competition, all teams become rivals. However, Trinity will not get to face its biggest rival of all — at least not until the playoffs. “Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to play Providence in the regular season this year,” said Coach Dow.” We were scheduled to play on September 3rd, and the FHSAA postponed regular-season play from August 17th to September 4th.“

Still, though, the Conquerors will battle some of North Florida’s finest. Baker County (home, September 10), Christ’s Church Academy (away, September 29), and Episcopal (home, October 1) are all on the docket. “[They] are all big rivalries that we are looking forward to playing in and obtaining redemption from last year.” Other tough opponents include the season opener at University Christian on September 8, Camden County (GA) at home on September 14, and at Fletcher on September 17.

The district playoffs begin on October 12.
